With Service in our Hearts, the Bloomington-Normal Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated (BNAC) is proud to join our Midwest Region sisters in the inaugural Regional Day of Service (RDOS). During BNAC’s RDOS, we will focus on diabetes.
For millions of people with diabetes, access to insulin is a matter of life and death. Yet, one in four insulin dependents are either rationing or skipping their insulin entirely because they can’t afford it, often with deadly consequences. Take the case of Shane Patrick Boyle.
As a comic book writer, Shane struggled to afford insulin, but received help from friends and his community. During a visit to his dying mother, he was unable to purchase insulin. Shane started a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for insulin. He was $50 short of his goal when he died from diabetic ketoacidosis a few days after his mother died.
In partnership with the American Diabetes Association, BNAC is calling for immediate action to make insulin affordable for everyone who needs this lifesaving medication.
